We got up early and headed out to the airport from Annerley, opting for the riverside motorway and inner city bypass, then plunging into the new airport link tunnel while it was still free. We had decided to spend an extra $10 to park at the airport instead of using the courtesy bus options and the trip took only about 20 minutes. This left us quite a bit of time to wait for our flight to Auckland, including our picnic breakfast - bananas and yoghurt?
It was our first time on Emirates which did not excite us. It seemed to be a noisy flight and the food was ordinary. At Auckland we gathered our thoughts, called the car rental people and changed pounds to kiwi dollars. Jucy rentals were nice to deal with and we headed south in our El Cheapo - conspicuously labelled on each side but really quite comfortable, airconditioned and automatic. We found the Hillside Hotel an hour south, high on a hill overlooking industrial Huntly with its coalmines and power station. It also overlooks an impressive Waikato river and plains.
It seems likely that there were only two other guests in a large establishment but the staff were friendly and the room large, comfortable and with lovely views - where to walk tomorrow.
We took a quick excursion into the supermarket in Huntly to gather some supplies, then settled into happy hour in our room. Dinner was served in the upper lounge with wonderful views and smart food which we enjoyed in moderation.
