Sweet Suites

Toowoomba concert Orchestra at Armitage Centre/Heritage Bank Auditorium

Handel Water Music, Suites from Carmen and a large orchestra. Most enjoyable despite the rather scruffy obese audience.

St Luke's Thursday Lunchtime Concert

First concert for 2023 was Peter Schneider on organ and piano. We arrived just in time with Vivaldi's Gloria on the organ and proceeded to some of his favourites: Debussy Prelude, Chopin Valse, Brahms Intermezzo , Beethoven Pathetique and Paderewski Menuet .

The Johnian Duo

Howard Munro organ and Ana Stevenson on recorder at the UQ Art Museum.
All that is left of the old Mayne Hall only built in our time at UQ in the 1970s is the organ and a small space at one end. I remember Robert Boughen played organ at Jim's graduation there before it became an Art Museum.
I think we went with Emily at lunch time and it was a good concert.

Service of Nine Lessons and Carols

We got back from Nepal on 10th December but I missed the concert at St Lukes. It was apparently very hot. I did however go to the breakup the following Wednesday and found that some choir people and Elizabeth Egan conducting, were singing in this service at St Lukes   the following Sunday with one rehearsal on Thursday night, so I went. It is the service we see in Carols from Kings so we got to walk down the aisle singing Once in Royal David's City with the Organ and up into the choir stalls. The Readings and prayers were suitably brief and I caught up with Graham and Judy Stevens while I was there.
A nice lead in to Christmas.

The Armed Man

A Mass for Peace. Music by Sir Karl Jenkins.
At Fairholme College Assembly Hall.

I really enjoyed learning this music but we went to Japan with Lee in September and only arrived home that morning so I was too tired to go. Also it is a good way to pass on any infection one might return with.

Toowoomba Choral Soc choir did it with Tba Cncert Orchestra and we went to one of their rehearsals at USQ. It was nice to be recognised by several players from Eileen's string concert at Greenmount in August when Dick got up and played.

Camerata at Empire Church Theatre

Encouraged by dick's new violin teacher, we went to Camerata which is Brisbane's string orchestra. They perform standing up like the ACO and it was a good performance with guests Diana Doherty on oboe with her partner on Cor Anglais, the combination making a delightful sound. The last item was a solo cello piece. It started at 7.30 and finished at 9 pm which  made a pleasant evening out.

Mother's Day Concert

An overnight stay at Yeronga and more cleaning of cupboards meant that we were able to go to the Indooroopilly Chamber Orchestra Concert at Indy High to support Ian Aitchison. Once again we had the youthful energy of conductor Nathaniel Griffiths and clarinet soloist Jessica Hort who played Weber's 2nd Clarinet Concerto. the orchestra opened with Cimarosa's Overture Il Matrimonio Segeto and did Beethoven's 7th Symphony after interval.
After the concert we enjoyed the afternoon tea with light rain but did not catch up with Ian as it was a slow path for him up to the foyer and he had a lot of family there.
Peter Doherty Theatre is a nice intimate venue and the amateur orchestra with a few augmented players is enjoyable.

Journey through Cosmos

We were lucky to have a free live simulcast of Journey through Cosmos from Brisbane on Saturday night. It was held in the new theatre space at the Empire and was sold out. It was an interesting combination of information on space exploration, visual imagery of the planets and space exploration vehicles, and two pieces of interesting music with QSO including very good vision of the orchestra and individual players.

Angelique Duo at Twilight

Angelique Duo at Twilight turned out to be a very good concert at USQ. Nicola Hayden [flute] and Sharon matheson [harp] are locals and they put together a very good programme. A couple of my choir friends said they would have liked more old fashioned music but I enjoyed the choice.

La Boheme

This performance of La Boheme by Opera Queensland included a local chorus.
The Empire Theatre was full but we had balcony seats and Em came up from Brisbane.  I am not sure if it is better seating than down below.

Toby Wren Trio

Another Jazz concert in the Twilight Series at USQ. Toby Wren Trio from Brisbane - guitar, double bass and drums - failed to organise a program of music and it just went on too long. They were probably quite competent individual musicians but it did not come together.
